BCM GFH 556 Mod 4
Often times, I subscribe to the “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mantra. This does a couple of things for me – one, it can potentially save me money and two, it means I’m not mucking around with adding or subtracting things which may or may not help me.
Also, when you add new accessories or change the original parts on say an AR15 rifle, you are going to have to lean how they may function differently and it may also require a change in your manipulations. Some of the changes may be small but it’s going to mean you’ll need more training with said items in order to be proficient.
On the other hand, there are certain products out there that are simply better than stock/original and don’t require fighting a steep learning curve.
One such product that you can add to your AR15 is the BCMGUNFIGHTER™ Charging Handle with extended latch. The charging handle on your AR15 is one of the easiest parts to swap out as evidenced by the piles of aftermarket offerings out there.
Despite all of the options, if you scrounge up a random sampling of so called “AR15 enthusiasts” you can be many of them will have heard of the BCMGUNFIGHTER being the best around and many will be users of the charging handle.
The BCMGUNFIGHTER handles feature internal redesigns to direct the force off of the roll pin and into the body of the charging handle during support hand only manipulations. This new design has a built in backstop engineered into the extended latch and into the charging handle.
As the latch is opened up, its’ travel is limited by these flat surface backstops. With this travel limiting feature, the stress is taken off the roll pin, and is now redirected into the entire body of the charging handle.
BCMGUNFIGHTER™ Charging Handle offers two significant advantages. 1. Since the tiny roll pin is no longer the weak point – it is a much stronger system and tactical latch will stay intact even under repeated support side only manipulation.
2. With the force kept inside the body of the handle, when the handle is pulled directly to the rear, it moves directly to the rear and does not angle off to the outboard side. A much smoother operation.
The older model was vastly popular but it’s clear BCM took steps to make these newer versions even better and more reliable. I can attest to how great they are because all of my AR15 uppers wear one. I even have extras in the parts bin for future uppers.
Mine happen to be the Medium Latch which they call Mod 4 and is featured in the image above. As you might guess, if there’s a Medium then there is likely a Small and Large latch available. You would be correct.
All of my reading and research has shown the Medium Latch to be most popular. I haven’t heard much talk about the small latch and it certainly does offer more latch over the stock charging handle. Comments on the large latch include experience of being “jabbed” in the stomach when slinging a rifle because it’s a rather substantial latch.
In the end it’s personal preference. The Medium Latch is the middle ground and as such is pretty darn popular. If you’re a fast and furious manipulator is might serve you well to ditch the anemic, stock charging handle and get a grip with a BCMGUNFIGHTER.
